1902 – Willis Carrier invents the world’s first mechanical air conditioner.
1906 – U.S. patent issued for “Apparatus for Treating Air”
1915 – Carrier Engineering Corp. is founded in New York.
1922 – Carrier develops a new coolant and a centrifugal refrigerating machine that enables the cooling of public spaces, changing the face of urban architecture.
1939 – Carrier invents a system for air conditioning skyscrapers.
1965 – Carrier installs ground-based environmental control systems for the Apollo-Saturn V moon program.
1979 – UTC acquires Carrier, the world’s largest manufacturer of air conditioning and refrigeration equipment.
1986 – Carrier establishes first of several joint ventures in China.
1996 – Carrier introduces its first product line of high efficiency residential air conditioners and heat pumps using the environmentally sound, non-ozone-depleting Puron® refrigerant.
1999 – Carrier enters into a global joint venture with Toshiba Corp. of Japan, a leader in residential and light commercial air conditioning ventilation equipment and compressors.
2004 – Carrier acquires Linde AG’s commercial refrigeration business and Automated Logic Corp., which installs building automation systems to improve energy efficiency and productivity in buildings
2008 – Carrier establishes a joint venture with Midea in China; acquires NORESCO to expand energy solutions capabilities and Maingate building automation company in china

Sustainability
Carrier was among the first companies to set energy reduction goals for our factories in 1988. This led to our first company-wide global environmental, health and safety goals in 1997. More recently, from 2000 to 2009, Carrier reduced its air emissions by 76 percent and water usage by 52 percent on an absolute basis. Since 2006, we have lowered our greenhouse gas emissions by 33 percent. Carrier is the first company in the HVACR industry to directly incorporate sustainability into its brand through the use of a stylized green leaf which emphasizes the company’s commitment to environmental stewardship.

Recent Innovations
2009 – Launches CO2OLtecTM food retail system which uses carbon dioxide, a natural refrigerant. In cool climates, such as in Northern Europe, the system can increase energy efficiency by up to 10 percent compared to systems using conventional refrigerants.
2009 – Launches AquaForce® 30XW water-cooled chiller, which is up to 20 percent more efficient than its predecessor
2009 – Launches Vector® 6500 trailer refrigeration unit, which generates up to 30 percent fewer emissions than U.S. Environmental Protection Agency standards.
2008 – Launches AvantACTM All-Electric bus system, the first of its kind in North America to provide constant passenger cooling regardless of vehicle engine speed
2007 – Introduces new 23XRV Evergreen® chiller with Foxfire® compression technology, the world’s most efficient chiller with non ozone-depleting refrigerant; also launches PrimeLINE® container unit with a reduced carbon footprint and 30 percent lower life cycle costs compared with competing units
2007 – Pilots a refrigeration system for retail stores that uses natural refrigerant carbon dioxide.
